Description

In 2004, the NSTM and Chunghwa Telecom collaborated on the restoration of telecommunications artifacts. To preserve Taiwan’s telecommunication cultural heritage, they jointly launched the “Telecom@ Taiwan” exhibition hall in 2011. The hall showcases over 900 telecommunications artifacts, presents stories through multimedia audiovisuals, and incorporates interactive games to help visitors understand the science and significance of telecommunications technology.

This hall presents the nearly 150-year history of telecommunications in Taiwan and the development of telecommunications technology. It features over 900 valuable Taiwanese telecommunications artifacts, numerous exciting audiovisual and interactive games, and introductions to the latest telecommunications services. It also encourages visitors to reflect on the future of telecommunications technology.

The entire hall is divided into 14 zones, each introducing significant telecommunication historical developments and technologies along a timeline. Visitors can explore the development of telecommunications in Taiwan from two different perspectives, the development of the industry’s history or the progression of telecommunication technology, both ending with the introduction of telecommunication today. This hall offers a comprehensive journey through the past and present of Taiwan’s information and communications history, inviting you to explore and learn together!

Focus

Invention of the Telegraph
Engage in hands-on operation of a telegraph device, complemented by video scenario introductions, to understand the principles and historical development of the telegraph. Participate in interactive games on-site to send various Morse code signals.
Invention of the Telephone
First, operate the transmitter button on the left to record audio, then learn about the principles and invention process of the telephone through a video. After the video ends , slide open the cover of the receiver on the right, which simulates Bell’s original invention, to hear the sound previously recorded through the transmitter on the left.
Magneto Telephone Switchboard
A manual telephone switchboard that facilitates telephone exchanges for users equipped with magneto telephones (crank telephones). Its main features are that both users and operators use hand-crank generators to ring and call each other before connecting the telephone lines.
Telephone Directory and Information Desk
The scene of a past information desk (including retro chairs and data turntables) is recreated. There are photos of the information personnel at work with their self-motivational slogans on-site to reproduce the working environment, allowing the public to understand that the on-duty operators at that time needed to maintain a positive attitude while assisting people with number inquiries.
Telecommunications General Store
The “Telephones for Every Village” project, launched in 1975, led to the current prevalence and convenience of telecommunications in Taiwan. The exhibition recreates the scene of a general store in an early-day village and displays telephone sets from the 1970s. The general store in the village was usually the village’s hotline hub, providing convenient telecommunications services to the villagers.
