The Establishment of the National Science and Technology Museum

History of the National Science and Technology Museum

  • In 1979, Executive Yuan announced the Twelve Construction Plans, listing the establishment of museums among the Central Cultural Facilities.
  • With the approval of Executive Yuan, the Preparation and Planning Group of NSTM was established in March 1984. In August, the team traveled to Europe, the USA, and Japan to inspect science museums.
  • In July 1986, the Preparatory Office of the National Science and Technology Museum was established to be in charge of preparations.
  • In 1987, TMA Architects and Associates were selected to oversee the design and construction of the architecture.
  • In November 1988 Executive Yuan approved the overall construction plan.
  • In October 1989 Constructions of the building began.
  • In July 1991, Executive Yuan approved the revision of the overall construction plan to expand the construction.
  • In 1992, construction including air conditioning engineering, hydropower engineering, construction and renovation of the first phase of the project, the elevator project, intelligent information and equipment engineering, construction and renovation of the second phase of the project, teaching center engineering, landscape engineering and display production, were contracted and constructed successively; the entire construction spanned up to seven years.
  • On July 26, 1997, the opening of the Technology Education Center was opened to the public.
  • On September 21, 1997, the park opens to the public.
  • On November 9, 1997, the ten Permanent Exhibition Halls officially opened to the public.
  • On November 8, 1998, all eighteen Permanent Exhibition Halls officially opened to the public.

Purpose of the National Science and Technology Museum

The National Science and Technology Museum is a national social education institution aimed at promoting science and technology education. Therefore, the National Science and Technology Museum is dedicated to the research, design, and display of various technological themes, and to introduce important technological development and its influence on everyday lives.

The Importance of the National Science and Technology Museum

Downtown Kaohsiung is home to various heavy industrial companies, such as China Steel, CSBC Corporation, Taiki Industrial, CCPC, oil refineries, and power plants. To coordinate with local industries, the National Science and Technology Museum has arranged exhibitions that are related to local industries and involve the principles and applications of science and technology. Not only does this benefit the area but also add a humanistic atmosphere into the industrial community.

Characteristics of the National Science and Technology Museum

Designed with high torque and high occupancy, the architecture of National Science and Technology Museum was structured to be used for one hundred years. The building was completed in one go. The architecture itself is a display of the connotations of the Science and Technology Museum. Using smart information equipment with scientific management, the building functions both as a display and demonstration. The ice storage system makes ice at night to be used during the day, dispersing the amount of electricity used during peak hours.
